ATHEN — ZAKYNTHOS

ISLAND TOUR

Breakfast at your hotel. Take a tour of Zakynthos to experience a variety of sights and scenic stops en route; you will you learn many facts about this beautiful Ionian island. Visit an olive oil factory on the way to the mountains; see spectacular views over the cliffs. Stop at the caves of the north island with an optional trip by small boat to access caves riddled with hollows eroded by the sea. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the blue light reflecting off the walls. The next stop is Anafonitria to explore a famous monastery; then enjoy lunch (not included) at a local mountain village before returning back to your hotel.

KEFALONIA

Breakfast at your hotel. You will be picked up from your resort and taken to the port to board your boat to Kefalonia, another Ionian island marked by sandy coves and dry rugged landscapes. Due to its indented coastline made of mostly limestone cliffs and bay, many beaches are accessible only by foot or narrow roads. Today’s tour will take you to visit the monastery of St. Gerassimos, the patron saint of the island of Kefalonia. See the impressive stalactite and stalagmites of Drogarati Cave; some estimate the cave is about 150 million years old. Explore Melissani Lake and Cave by boat to see the colour of the water reflected onto the walls of the cave. Stop for lunch (not included) and a stroll or a swim in Aghia Efimia, a wonderful town with a small harbour. Drive towards Myrtos Bay, one of Kefalonia’s most famous beaches for a photo stop. Finally, visit Argostoli, the capital of the island, built on a hillside overlooking a narrow harbour. Grab a snack, relax in the square or have a walk to explore on your own before returning to the pier for your boat ride back to Zakynthos.

NAVAGIO/SHIPWRECK BEACH

Breakfast at your hotel. In 1980, a freightliner, the MV Panagiotis, found itself in difficult waters around Zakynthos Island on Navagio Beach during stormy weather and bad visibility. It has been rumored the ship was smuggling contraband such as cigarettes and wine. The ship was abandoned and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach that now bears the nickname Shipwreck Beach or Smuggler’s Cove. Today you will be picked up and transferred to the main harbour of Zante town to board a luxury speed boat for an unforgettable experience cruising to the north of the Island. Pass the residential area of Krioneri, the resort areas of Tsilivi, Alykanas and Alykes, up to Skinari, the most northern part of the island, where you can see the lighthouse. Head into Smuggler’s Cove where the shipwreck can be seen, and a stop for a wonderful swim in the lovely blue waters. Those strong swimmers wanting to swim ashore can do so with the captain’s permission, as there is no dock. The beach is not sandy and has small white pebbles. Smuggler’s Cove is only accessible by the sea; docking and swimming only if weather permits. Next, sail to the famous Blue Caves discovered in 1897; its name comes from the colour of the water, a blend of aquamarine and turquoise. Stop here for a swim before you return to town and continue on to your hotel.
