TROMSØ
After breakfast, make your way to the pier to embark on an Arctic fjord cruise. As we leave Tromsø behind, you’ll gain a new perspective of the city from the water. With the mainland on our left, we sail past colorful houses, small farms, and quiet roads that offer a glimpse into everyday life in Northern Norway. As we approach the entrance to Ramfjorden, the boat slows down and switches to 100% electric. From here, we glide silently into the fjord.
Our first destination is Holmen Island, once a remote fishing station turned wartime outpost. During World War II, Holmen played a strategic role, serving as a lookout and minor military base. Today, it stands quietly in the fjord, waiting for you to visit. Here, we deploy an underwater drone*, revealing life beneath the surface. Through our onboard screens, guests get a unique glimpse of Arctic marine ecosystems, from starfish and kelp forests to crab and cod habitats—all in real time.
We then cross to the island of Rya, home to a quaint fishing facility. Here, guests disembark for a short land visit that offers a deeper look into life along the northern coast. The stop includes two small museums, a traditional drying rack, and a local tasting surprise, all surrounded by peaceful island scenery.
Inside the museums, you’ll learn how cod fishing shaped life in Northern Norway for thousands of years. One highlight is skrei, which remains a vital part of the region’s culture and economy. You’ll discover how these fish are caught, processed, and turned into Norway’s famous stockfish.
The exhibition areas are small and full of character, and you are welcome to explore at your own pace. Pick up and handle old tools, see dried cod on display, and admire black-and-white photos of local fisheries from decades ago. Weather-worn clothing once used by fishermen hangs on the walls. It’s a hands-on, personal way to connect with the past.
Before heading back to the boat, we invite you to enjoy a local tasting—a small sample of Tromsø’s fishing heritage. Whether it’s dried fish, roe, or a seasonal bite, it’s a chance to try something traditional. A final flavor to match the surroundings, before we sail on.
On our way back, we cruise by Tromsøya and Håkøya. These islands carry stories of World War II, including air raids and the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz, alongside peaceful glimpses of modern island life today. Here, our guides will point out key landmarks while sharing the history of these waters. After a day of stories, scenery, and sea air, we begin our journey back to Tromsø. As we cruise through the last stretch of fjord, you’ll have time to relax, take in the views, and reflect on everything you’ve seen and learned.
*Note: Weather and currents on the day of the cruise may result in cancellation of the drone for safety reasons.
Operating season: February to October
