Today’s destination will be the world-famous Golden Circle. This trio of natural wonders is an ideal introduction to Iceland’s geology and history. Drive through scenic countryside on the way to Geysir geothermal area. This is the home of the great Geysir spouting hot spring, the one who was the inspiration for the English word “geyser.” Geysir is not so active these days, but its cousin, Strokkur, shoots up a beautiful plume of steam and hot water about every ten minutes. Take some time to stroll on the path that brings you around the area’s erupting hot springs and surreal bubbling mud pools.

Near Geysir is the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, the Golden Falls. Some Icelanders believe Gullfoss is the country’s most beautiful waterfall. You can enjoy spectacular views of Gullfoss from different angles on a series of footpaths. We also recommend a stop at the monument of Sigríour Tomasdottir, the courageous woman whose activism helped establish Gullfoss as a protected natural wonder in the early 20th century.

The final “segment” of the Golden Circle is Þingvellir National Park (UNESCO World Heritage site) where the world’s oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. This place makes us Icelanders enormously proud of our heritage. Thingvellir is also where the European and North American tectonic plates diverge. You can see the dividing line, and you might even have a rare chance to walk between two continents!

The road now leads to the charming Borgarfjorour region in West Iceland. This evening, join us for an engaging eclipse seminar in Borgarnes town. Our hand-picked team of speakers will share their insights about the upcoming eclipse. You’ll learn Iceland’s geology and what happens in the skies above the Land of Fire and Ice. You’ll also learn what to expect during the eclipse. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink and dinner with your group before you head to your hotel for the night.

Breakfast at your hotel. Today is the day! The eclipse is scheduled for late afternoon in Iceland’s far west. This will be the first total solar eclipse in Iceland since 1954—and with a bit of luck, you’ll be part of the experience! Before heading to the viewing point, your tour group will explore the incredible variety of natural landscapes in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and its national park. Known as “Iceland in a Nutshell,” Snæfellsnes features many of the diverse landscapes found throughout the country. These include the distinctively photogenic Kirkjufell Mountain, the magnificent basalt formations near the village of Arnarstapi, and the uniquely pebbled seascape of Djúpalónssandur Beach. The crown jewel is Snæfellsjökull Glacier itself, which covers a dormant volcano. Local legend says a benevolent spirit resides on Snæfellsjökull and watches over the area. There is certainly a mystical atmosphere about Snæfellsnes—one that the approaching eclipse will only deepen.

During the day, savor a Snæfellsnes-style lunch at a cozy village restaurant. The eclipse is expected to begin forming around 4:45 p.m. The sky will dim, and time will seem to pause as the moon’s umbral shadow falls across western Iceland. As the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, it will block all direct sunlight, transforming bright daylight into dark twilight. If conditions are ideal, you will see the glowing solar corona and the beautiful “diamond ring” effect at the edge. The total eclipse will last about two minutes, though the entire process spans approximately two hours.

After an unforgettable day, your group will return to the hotel for the evening. Dinner and overnight in the Borgarfjörður area.

After breakfast, drive along the South Shore, a region of Iceland known for its striking contrasts—where volcanoes and glaciers coexist. This area also boasts some of the country’s best farmland, and you’ll pass charming farmhouses, often surrounded by multi-colored herds of horses grazing peacefully in the fields.

If the skies are clear, you may catch sight of two of Iceland’s most famous volcanoes in the distance: the beautiful Mount Hekla (last eruption in 2000) and the glacier-capped Eyjafjallajökull (last eruption in 2010). You might also glimpse the volcanic Westman Islands archipelago far out at sea. Stop to visit the spectacular waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Each is uniquely stunning and offers excellent photo opportunities. Seljalandsfoss features a rare trail that lets you walk behind the curtain of water, while Skógafoss is said to conceal buried treasure and makes an impressive backdrop for selfies. Continue onward to Reynisfjara Beach, where you can stroll along the black sand and admire the dramatic basalt rock formations and powerful Atlantic waves. From there, you’ll drive to Hveragerði, a picturesque town located in a geothermally active area.

After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to the village of Hveragerði, one of the few places in the world located directly in the middle of a geothermal area. Known as “The Flower Village,” Hveragerði is famous for its geothermal greenhouses that thrive in the naturally warm environment. Next, you’ll head onto a scenic southern coastal road, following the shoreline with its breathtaking sea views. The route leads through the otherworldly landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you can enjoy a relaxing dip in the famous Blue Lagoon — a natural wonder with warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by a black lava field. Return to Reykjavík, where your guide will bid you farewell at the hotel. Enjoy the balance of your day at leisure.
